Understanding Adrenal Vein Asymmetry: Anatomy & Causes
The right adrenal vein is shorter and wider than the left adrenal vein due to the difference in the position and anatomy of the right and left adrenal glands:
- Right Adrenal Gland:
- Located at a higher level, superior to the right kidney.
- Partially covered by the liver, which can lead to compression.
- Left Adrenal Gland:
- Located at a lower level, anterior to the left kidney.
- Usually not influenced by surrounding structures.
The compression of the right adrenal gland and its vein by the liver causes the right adrenal vein to be shorter and wider compared to the longer and narrower left adrenal vein.
