Scoliosis is a medical term for an abnormal curvature of the spine to the side. In some cases the spine can also be rotated or twisted. Pain and dysfunction can accompany this irregular bone alignment and make finding a comfortable sleeping position challenging. However, with some patience and through trial and error, it is possible to find an optimal sleep position with scoliosis.Things You'll Need
- Supportive mattress
- Several pillows
- Towel rolls
Instructions
How to Sleep on the Back with Scoliosis
Position body in supine position on mattress.
Support head and neck with a pillow, towel roll or wedge.
Position pillows or towel rolls in the small of back and around hips and waist area to support spine.
Add extra pillows or towel rolls to elevated or curved side of body.
Rest forearms and hands on a pillow.
How to Sleep Sidelying with Scoliosis
Lie on side that is most comfortable. Rotate weight-bearing hip and shoulder forward.
Position pillows or towel rolls under head and around hips/waist area to support spine.
Position top leg in front of weight-bearing leg and support with pillows from the knee to the foot.
Add extra pillows as necessary to support entire side.
Position an additional pillow along torso to support upper arm.
