Why do people get sore throats?
Viral infections:- Most sore throats (around 90%) are caused by viruses, such as the common cold virus.
Bacterial infections:
- A small number of sore throats (around 10%) are caused by bacteria, such as the bacteria that causes strep throat. Strep throat is more common in children than adults.
Irritants:
- Sore throats can also be caused by irritants, such as smoke, dust, or pollution.
- Allergies to things like pollen or pet dander can also cause a sore throat.
- Dry air can further irritate the throat and cause soreness.
Other causes:
- Sometimes, a sore throat can be a symptom of a more serious medical condition, such as mononucleosis (a viral infection that causes fever, sore throat, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes) or tonsillitis (inflammation of the tonsils).
