Microtox® Test: Understanding Toxicity Assessment
The Microtox® test is an in vitro bioassay that estimates the toxicity of a sample by exposing a marine bacterium, Vibrio fischeri, to the sample and measuring the inhibition of bacterial light output. The Vibrio fischeri bacteria emit light as a byproduct of their metabolism. When the bacteria are exposed to a toxic substance, the light output decreases. The amount of decrease is proportional to the toxicity of the sample.
