Female Reproductive System: Key Organs & Functions
The primary female reproductive organs are:
- The uterus: This is a pear-shaped organ located in the lower abdomen, between the bladder and the rectum. The uterus is lined with a thick, muscular layer called the myometrium, which contracts to expel the baby during childbirth.
- The ovaries: These are two almond-shaped organs located on either side of the uterus. The ovaries produce and release eggs (ova) during ovulation.
- The fallopian tubes: These are two tubes that connect the ovaries to the uterus. The fallopian tubes are lined with cilia, which help to move the egg from the ovary to the uterus.
- The cervix: This is the lower, narrow part of the uterus that opens into the vagina. The cervix produces mucus that helps to protect the egg during its journey to the uterus.
- The vagina: This is a muscular, elastic tube that leads from the cervix to the outside of the body. The vagina is used for sexual intercourse and childbirth.
