Ovarian Cyst vs. Cancer: Understanding the Differences & When to See a Doctor

You cannot definitively tell the difference between an ovarian cyst and ovarian cancer without seeing a doctor. Here are some general differences, but it is important to note that only a doctor can provide an accurate diagnosis:

Ovarian cysts

- Often asymptomatic, meaning they do not cause any noticeable symptoms

- Usually benign (non-cancerous)

- Common in women of reproductive age

- Can range in size from small (a few millimeters) to large (several centimeters)

- May cause mild symptoms such as bloating, pelvic pain, or irregular periods

- Usually go away on their own within a few months

Ovarian cancer

- Often presents with vague symptoms such as bloating, pelvic pain, or irregular periods

- Symptoms may also include weight loss, fatigue, difficulty urinating, or constipation

- More common in women over the age of 50

- Can be more aggressive and spread to other parts of the body if not treated early

It is important to see a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms to rule out ovarian cancer or any other underlying medical conditions.
