Understanding Tongue Papillae: Types, Function & What They Are
Papillae.
Papillae are small, tongue-shaped projections on the tongue's surface. They contain taste buds and the other structures that give the tongue its texture. Papillae can be classified into four main types: vallate, fungiform, filiform, and conical. Vallate papillae are the largest and are arranged in a V-shape at the back of the tongue. Fungiform papillae are smaller and are scattered across the entire tongue. Filiform papillae are the most common and give the tongue its rough texture. Conical papillae are the least common and are found at the tip of the tongue.
