Blow Jaw in Goats: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment
Blow Jaw, is an infection found primarily in the teeth of a goat, but can also be caused by sharp, or broken teeth. It is a condition in which bacteria (Actinomyces Pyogenes) infect the bone of the jaw, causing painful swelling and discharge from the mouth. The infection can spread to the lymph nodes and other bones of the skull, leading to serious health problems.
Common symptoms of blow jaw include:
- Difficulty eating and drinking
- Swelling and pain in the jaw
- Discharge from the mouth
- Drooping of the lower lip
- Weight Loss
Treatment typically involves antibiotics and surgery to remove the infected bone. In some cases, the entire jaw may need to be removed. Prevention involves regular veterinary care and proper nutrition to maintain healthy teeth.
