Understanding Dental Plaque: Causes, Risks & Removal
Plaque is a sticky, colorless film that forms on your teeth every day. It is made up of bacteria, food particles, and saliva. Plaque can cause tooth decay and gum disease if it is not removed regularly.
Plaque forms when bacteria in your mouth feed on the sugars in food and drinks. These bacteria produce acids that attack your teeth and gums. Plaque can also harden into tartar, which is a more serious form of plaque that can only be removed by a dentist.
There are a number of things you can do to prevent plaque from forming, including:
* Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
* Floss your teeth once a day.
* Avoid sugary foods and drinks.
* Drink plenty of water.
* See your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.
