Splits in the corner of your mouth?
Angular cheilitis, also known as perlèche or angular stomatitis, is a condition that causes splits or cracks in the corners of the mouth. It can be painful and make it difficult to eat, drink, and talk.
Angular cheilitis is common in older adults and people who have certain medical conditions, such as:
- Diabetes
- Iron deficiency
- Vitamin B12 deficiency
- Crohn's disease
- HIV/AIDS
- Cancer
- Sjogren's syndrome
Angular cheilitis can also be caused by:
- Poor oral hygiene
- Wearing dentures that don't fit properly
- Smoking
- Prolonged exposure to sun or wind
Treatment for angular cheilitis typically involves:
- Applying a moisturizer to the affected area
- Taking an antifungal or antibiotic medication, if the condition is caused by an infection
- Eating a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
- Avoiding smoking and prolonged exposure to sun or wind
Angular cheilitis is usually a minor condition that can be easily treated. However, it can be a sign of an underlying medical condition, so it's important to see your doctor if you develop symptoms of angular cheilitis.
