What Is Kyasanur Forest Disease?
Kyasanur Forest Disease is a viral hemorrhagic fever that is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected ticks. The disease was first identified in 1957 in the Kyasanur Forest of Karnataka, India, which gives the disease its name.
Symptoms:
• Sudden high fever
• Severe headache
• Muscle pain
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Rash (may appear on the palms, soles, and trunk)
• Bleeding from gums, nose, and gastrointestinal tract
• Low blood pressure
• Encephalitis (in severe cases)
Treatment
• There is no specific treatment for Kyasanur Forest Disease, and treatment is supportive.
• Patients may be given fluids, electrolytes, and pain relievers.
• In severe cases, patients may need to be hospitalized and may require intensive care.
Prevention:
• Avoid tick-infested areas, especially during the monsoon season.
• Wear long sleeves and pants when in wooded areas.
• Use insect repellent containing DEET.
• Check your body for ticks after spending time outdoors.
• Remove ticks promptly and carefully with tweezers.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth if you find a tick on your skin.
• If you develop any symptoms of Kyasanur Forest Disease, seek medical attention immediately.
