Descending Colon & Rectum: Anatomy, Function & Health
Descending Colon:- Part of the large intestine located on the left side of the abdomen.
- It connects the transverse colon to the sigmoid colon.
- The primary function of the descending colon is to absorb water and electrolytes from the stool, further solidifying it.
- It also stores stool temporarily until it moves to the sigmoid colon for elimination.
Rectum:
- The final segment of the large intestine, connecting the sigmoid colon to the anus.
- The rectum is responsible for storing stool and facilitating its controlled elimination through the process of defecation.
- It has specialised muscles and sphincters that allow for the retention and release of stool.
- The rectum also has sensory receptors that help detect the need for defecation.
