What cells are in the spinal cord?
Neurons
- Motor neurons: Carry signals from the brain to the muscles, allowing for movement.
- Sensory neurons: Transmit sensory information from the body to the brain.
- Interneurons: Connect neurons within the spinal cord and help to process and relay signals.
Glial cells
- Astrocytes: Provide support and nutrition for neurons and help to maintain the blood-brain barrier.
- Oligodendrocytes: Form the myelin sheath around axons, which helps to speed up the transmission of electrical signals.
- Microglia: Act as the immune cells of the spinal cord and help to protect it from damage.
Ependymal cells
- Line the central canal of the spinal cord and help to produce cerebrospinal fluid.
