Bump-Outs in Real Estate: Definition, Benefits & Examples
In real estate, a bump-out is an outward projection or extension of a building, often from the back or side of a house beyond the main exterior wall. Bump-outs are typically added for additional space, such as to extend a kitchen, add a bay window, or create a breakfast nook. They can also be used to improve the home's aesthetics and curb appeal.
Bump-outs are different from dormers, which are vertical extensions of the roof that create additional space in the upper portion of the home, often for a bedroom or bathroom in a story-and-a-half or two-story home. Bump-outs, on the other hand, extend the living space on one level, typically at ground level.
Commonly located in the rear of the home, bump-outs can also be added to the front or sides, but this may require additional permitting and may impact the home's overall exterior design.
