Why are blackfly bites itchy?
The bites of blackflies are itchy because of the proteins in their saliva. These proteins act as irritants and cause the body to release histamine, a chemical that causes inflammation and itching. Additionally, blackflies often bite in clusters, which can further increase the itchiness.
Here are some tips to help relieve the itchiness of blackfly bites:
- Wash the affected area with soap and water as soon as possible after being bitten.
- Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the area to reduce swelling and itching.
- Use an over-the-counter antihistamine to help reduce itching.
- Avoid scratching the bites, as this can worsen the itching and increase the risk of infection.
- If the bites are severe or do not improve after a few days, see a doctor.
