Ringworm and Tanning Beds: Can UV Rays Help?
Tanning beds cannot kill ringworm.
Ringworm, also known as Tinea, is caused by a type of fungus that lives on the skin. The fungus that causes ringworm lives off keratin, a protein that is found in the skin, hair, and nails. Tanning beds emit ultraviolet radiation (UV) which can kill skin cells and damage the DNA of the fungus, however, it is not enough to completely destroy the fungus and completely eradicate the infection. To effectively treat ringworm, it is important to use antifungal treatments prescribed by a doctor. These treatments can include topical creams, oral medications, or a combination of both.
