Troubleshooting Rescue Breathing: What to Do When Breaths Don't Go In
If the rescuer’s two breaths don’t go in
*Check for an airway obstruction.
*Open the airway using head tilt/chin lift or jaw thrust.
*If the object can be seen, remove it cautiously with a finger sweep or use back blows and chest thrusts.
*Give two rescue breaths.
If an airway obstruction continues
*Continue with steps to relieve an obstructed airway.
If there is still an obstruction
*Turn the victim on their side and give back blows and chest thrusts.
If the obstruction is relieved
*Continue CPR according to the compression to ventilation ratio of 30:2 until:
*There are signs of life:
*The person starts breathing
*The person coughs
*The person moves
*An AED is available and ready to use
*Emergency Medical Service (EMS) personnel take over
