Checking for Breathing: Signs and What to Do
Signs of breathing
* Chest movement: The chest should rise and fall with each breath.
* Abdominal movement: The abdomen should rise and fall with each breath.
* Air movement: You should be able to feel air moving in and out of the person's mouth and nose.
* Breath sounds: You should be able to hear breath sounds using a stethoscope.
Other signs of life
In addition to signs of breathing, there are other signs that indicate that a person is alive. These include:
* Pulse: The pulse can be felt at the wrist, the temple, or the neck.
* Heartbeat: The heartbeat can be heard using a stethoscope.
* Blood pressure: Blood pressure can be measured using a blood pressure cuff.
* Oxygen saturation: Oxygen saturation can be measured using a pulse oximeter.
If you are not sure if someone is breathing, it is important to check for other signs of life. If the person is not breathing and there are no other signs of life, you should start CPR immediately.
