Understanding Bronchioles: Types and Functions
Types of Bronchioles
The bronchioles are the smallest branches of the bronchial tree, and they are responsible for conducting air to and from the alveoli. There are two types of bronchioles:
* Terminal bronchioles are the smallest bronchioles, and they lead directly to the alveoli. They are lined with ciliated columnar epithelial cells, which help to move mucus and foreign particles out of the lungs.
* Respiratory bronchioles are larger than terminal bronchioles, and they branch off of them. They are also lined with ciliated columnar epithelial cells, but they also contain Clara cells, which produce a surfactant that helps to keep the alveoli open.
The bronchioles play a vital role in the respiratory system, and they are responsible for ensuring that the lungs receive a sufficient supply of air.
