Artificial Blood: History, Development & How It Works
The first artificial blood substitute was developed by Soviet scientists in the 1970s. It was called perfluorochemical emulsion (PFC). PFCs are a group of chemicals that are made up of carbon and fluorine atoms. They are able to carry oxygen and carbon dioxide, just like hemoglobin.
