Post-Spine Surgery Recovery: Essential Care & Tips
There are many types of surgical procedures done to repair spine damage. Certain procedures require more recovery time than others. Ultimately there are some basic post-operative procedures to properly care for yourself. Talk to your doctor about your specific recovery plan.-
Incision Care
-
Keep the incision clean and covered. Do not allow it to get and stay wet as this may lead to infection.
Bending
-
Bending places a strain on the entire back. You should avoid bending down to tie shoes or pick up items.
Lifting
-
Lift restrictions are common with all spine surgery procedures. Avoid lifting grocery bags or boxes or playing sports that will strain your back as lifting does.
Braces
-
For spinal fusions or highly invasive procedures, you will have a hard brace that needs to be used while in a car and any high traffic areas in which you may be bumped. A soft collar is given to those with less invasive procedures and to alternate in less risky areas for those with hard collars.
Rehabilitation
-
You should start physical therapy around a month after surgery to regain strength and flexibility in your muscles.
Pain Management
-
Talk pain medications as prescribed by your doctor. If the pain is unmanageable, ask for a different type of medication that may be more effective.
