Ostomy Pouch Cutting Guide: Achieving the Perfect Fit
Ostomy pouches are external devices attached to the abdomen to collect draining stool. Doctors form a stoma which is the place where stool will enter into the drainage pouch. Devices can be cut to give an optimum fit using a pair of scissors. Drainage devices need to be changed about every five to seven days or as directed by your doctor.Things You'll Need
- Skin barrier
- Scissors
- Drainage pouch
Instructions
Remove drainage pouch and clean area according to your discharge instructions.
Choose the size of the stoma with the measuring card.
Cut the barrier 1/16th an inch larger than the stoma with the scissors. Make the edges as smooth as possible for comfort.
Peel the backing of the skin barrier and place over stoma.
Attach the new drainage pouch, with end pointing toward feet, and hold in place for a few minutes. Use a warm washcloth to help form the seal on the skin.
