Mitral valve
- The mitral valve, also called the bicuspid valve, is a one-way valve that controls blood flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle of the heart.
- It is located between the left atrium and the left ventricle.
- The mitral valve is made of two thin flaps of tissue called leaflets which are attached to the heart muscle by chords and papillary muscles.
- During ventricular systole, the mitral valve closes to prevent blood flowing backward into the atrium.
- During ventricular diastole, the mitral valve opens to allow blood to flow from the atrium to the ventricle.
