Umbilical Cord Prolapse: Immediate First Aid & Emergency Steps
If you think the umbilical cord has prolapsed, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately. While you wait for help to arrive, follow these steps:
1. Have the mother lie down on her back, with her feet elevated. This will help to take the pressure off the cord and reduce the risk of the baby's oxygen supply being cut off.
2. Cover the cord with a clean cloth or towel. This will help to keep the cord warm and moist.
3. Try to keep the mother calm and still. This will help to reduce the risk of further complications.
