What to Expect After Meniscus Surgery
The meniscus is a flat ring of cartilage located between the femur and the tibia in the knee joint. Its primary function is to provide stability to the knee and act as a shock absorber.-
Hospital Stay
-
Meniscus repair surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. You should be able to go home the same day, unless there are other complications.
Post Op
-
Immediately after surgery, you will be taken to the recovery room until the anesthesia wears off. Once the doctor is convinced your pain is under control, you will be given instructions and prescriptions, and released to go home.
Instructions
-
The nurse will provide specific instructions regarding care of the wound dressing and incision, showering, braces, exercise, and more.
Rehabilitation
-
Rehabilitation targets tissue healing, regaining strength and motion, and a return to pre-surgery work or school activities.
Warning
-
People heal at different rates. You can generally expect a return to prior activity level within four to eight weeks. This can vary greatly depending upon how fast you heal and dedication to the rehabilitation process.
