Hydrochlorothiazide and Surgery: What You Need to Know
It is generally recommended that you stop taking Hydrochlorothiazide at least 24 hours before surgery.
Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic (water pill) that can cause dehydration. Dehydration can increase the risk of complications during surgery, such as low blood pressure, electrolyte imbalances, and kidney problems.
In some cases, your doctor may advise you to continue taking Hydrochlorothiazide up until the day of surgery. However, this is only if the benefits of continuing the medication outweigh the risks.
If you are taking Hydrochlorothiazide, be sure to tell your doctor about it before surgery. Your doctor will advise you on whether or not you should stop taking the medication before your procedure.
