Glossectomy Aftercare: Post-Surgery Recovery & Pain Management
Postoperative care- Monitor airway and vital signs closely in recovery room
- Pain control
- IV hydromorphone (Dilaudid)
- transition to PO NSAIDs/morphine or Oxycodone
- NG/OG to low intermittent suction for 7-10 days to minimize edema and prevent aspiration.
- Clear liquids/full liquid diet initially then advance as tolerated
- NPO until gag reflex returns
- Encourage use of incentive spirometer to prevent atelectasis
- Log roll when in bed to prevent skin breakdown and pressure ulcers
- Head of the bed elevated 30-45 degrees
- Change tracheostomy dressing frequently
- Monitor for s/s of infection - fever, purulent secretions, change in character of odor, pain
- Oral/dental care: Soft bristled toothbrush, mouthwash, avoid traumatizing or brushing surgical area - use damp gauze to clean surgical area.
