History of Cataracts: Ancient Origins & Early Descriptions

Cataracts have been known since ancient times. The earliest written description of cataracts is found in the Ebers Papyrus, an ancient Egyptian medical text that dates back to around 1500 BC. The Ebers Papyrus describes a cataract as a "white film that forms over the eye and obscures vision."
