Monorail Crane Safety: Preventing Injuries & Accidents
Improper use of monorail cranes can result in injury or death according to the Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA). Workers could be pinched between a load and another object or struck by a load.-
Pre-Inspection
-
Inspect your wire rope before beginning work watching for kinks or broken strands. Check the hook for nicks or gouges. Verify that your crane's braking system works before beginning work.
Operation
-
Always block your load if a sling or other lifting device must be removed under your load. Be cautious when removing these lifting devices from a blocked load. Store your hoist load block and hook above head level to avoid people running into them.
Warning
-
Do not operate any monorail crane that is malfunctioning, damaged or is suspected of either. Do not attempt to repair or lengthen wire rope. Do not obscure warning labels or let the wire rope touch the welding electrode.
