Space Heater Safety: Essential Facts & Precautions
Portable space heaters offer cost savings compared to operating a furnace and are inexpensive to purchase; however, there are several safety factors to consider prior to operating portable space heaters. Safety is the foremost consideration when operating a space heater.-
Heating Elements
-
Heating elements get hot enough to ignite combustible materials in the vicinity of the heater. It is necessary to maintain safe distances from combustible objects as listed in the owner's manual of the heater.
Water
-
Never position a portable space heater near a water source such as bathtub, shower or sink because of the danger of electrocution.
Stability
-
Portable space heaters must be placed on solid and level surfaces to prevent tipping. Although heaters have automatic tipping shut-off switches, they sometimes do not function properly and can cause fires.
Guards
-
All guards must be kept in place to prevent children from accidentally burning themselves on the elements. The guards will also minimize the chances of fire if an object falls onto the heater.
Cords
-
Extension cords should not be used unless absolutely necessary. The cords must be 14 gauge or heavier wire and must not be run under rugs, papers or other combustible materials.
