Home Care for Minor Burns: Treatment & When to Seek Medical Help
Most minor burns can be treated at home successfully; however, depending on the type of burn---chemical, electrical or thermal---treatment may differ slightly. When in doubt, it is best to seek medical advice.-
Rinse
-
After removing any clothing from around the burned skin, rinse the area with cold water.
Antibiotics
-
To prevent further damage from infection, apply an antibiotic ointment like silver sulfadiazine cream to the burn.
Bandage
-
A sterile bandage can also be placed over the burn area to prevent infection.
Medications
-
Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be taken to reduce pain and discomfort.
Chemical Burns
-
In the case of burns caused by exposure to corrosive chemicals, remove any contaminated clothing and flush the affected area with water.
