Tissue Sample Division: Formalin Fixation & Frozen Storage Explained
A sample of tissue from a suspect area can be divided into two portions:
- One portion is fixed in formalin and sent to a pathology laboratory for examination under a microscope. The pathologist will look for abnormal cells or other changes that may indicate cancer.
- The other portion can be frozen and stored for use in future studies or testing. It can also be used for DNA testing or other molecular analysis.
