How to Turn Off a Fire Hydrant
Emergency personnel depend on their equipment being in good working condition so they can perform their jobs effectively. This includes fire hydrants. Periodic testing of fire hydrants ensures they are working properly, but you can't test a hydrant unless you know how to turn it off when you're done.Things You'll Need
- Fire hydrant wrench
Instructions
Obtain any required permits from the city if you are not a trained emergency employee.
Utilize the fire hydrant wrench, making left turns to start closing the fire hydrant. The turns should be deliberate and strong. When you feel it tighten at the end of your turn, the hydrant will be closed completely.
Remove the valve assembly and allow ample time for the remaining water to drain. In freezing temperatures, water left undrained may damage the fire hydrant.
Replace the cap back in its secured position.
Detach any hoses from the fire hydrant. If you leave hoses or any other attachments intact, the city may impose fines and remove the abandoned equipment.
