First Aid: How to Immobilize a Broken Bone with a Splint
Broken bones are a common injury, especially in children, because their bones are softer, according to KidsHealth.org. The most important step to take when dealing with a broken bone is to keep the body part as still as possible. Moving the bone can cause a lot of pain and more damage. Use a splint to hold the injury still while transporting the victim to a hospital or doctor. If you can't safely wrap the splint, find assistance or call an ambulance.Things You'll Need
- Board or rolled-up newspapers
- Cloth
- Elastic bandage or medical tape
Instructions
Remove clothing from the area if possible.
Place a board or rolled-up newspapers under the break and the closest joint. Wrap cloth around the entire area.
Tape up the board and cloth around the limb with an elastic bandage or medical tape. Don't make the wrap too tight.
