Crib Bumpers: Safety Risks & AAP Recommendations
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends against the use of crib bumpers. Crib bumpers are soft padding that is placed around the inside of a crib to prevent a baby's head, arms, or legs from getting caught between the crib slats. However, the AAP warns that crib bumpers can actually increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related deaths.
The AAP recommends that parents follow these safety tips when putting their baby to sleep:
* Place your baby on their back to sleep.
* Use a firm crib mattress.
* Do not use pillows, blankets, or other soft bedding in your baby's crib.
* Keep the crib clear of toys, stuffed animals, and other objects.
By following these safety tips, you can help reduce the risk of SIDS and other sleep-related deaths in your baby.
