Illinois Disability Parking Placards: Types, Requirements & Application
Living with a disability may cause difficulties in reaching your destination across a parking lot. Having a state-issued disability placard shortens the distance you're required to walk. In the state of Illinois, there are three types of hanging placards available for disabled persons. A blue, permanent placard requires renewal every four years. A red, temporary disabled placard, good for six months, requires a physician's approval until the disability has healed or no longer qualifies. Organizations for disabled people that provide transportation receive a green placard every four years upon renewal.Things You'll Need

Instructions
Download and print the "Application for Illinois Disabled Person Identification Card" on the state of Illinois DMV website.
Contact your physician and arrange for your physician to complete the first page of the application. This is required information for approval of an application, as only certain disabilities qualify for disability placards. Your physician also determines whether your application is temporary or permanent.
Complete the second page of the application yourself; indicating your request is for the placard. The placard is free of charge and is removable from your rearview mirror when not in use. There is a fee for requesting disabled use license plates.
Mail, or turn in, your "Application for Illinois Disabled Person Identification Card" to the Illinois Secretary of State's address listed on the application and website. Once the application is processed and approved, your disability placard will arrive in the mail.
