CPT Code 99241: Office Consultation – New or Established Patient

CPT 99241 (deleted in 2023) previously described an office consultation for a new or established patient requiring three key components:

• Problem-focused history
• Problem-focused examination
• Straightforward medical decision-making

Typical face-to-face time: 15 minutes.

Important Notes

• Consultation codes (99241–99245) were eliminated for Medicare in 2010 and for all payers in 2023. Use appropriate E/M codes (99202–99215) instead.
• Preventive medicine services (99381–99397) are distinct from problem-oriented visits.
• Hospital observation codes (99217–99220) are separate.
