Zyrtec and COPD: Can Antihistamines Help?
Zyrtec (cetirizine) is an antihistamine that is commonly used to treat allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and urticaria (hives). It works by blocking the effects of histamine, a chemical that is released by the body during an allergic reaction.COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a progressive respiratory disease that causes airflow obstruction and shortness of breath. It is not caused by an allergic reaction, so Zyrtec is not typically used to treat COPD.
COPD is typically treated with medications that help to relax the airways and reduce inflammation, such as bronchodilators (e.g., albuterol) and inhaled corticosteroids (e.g., budesonide).
If you have COPD and are experiencing allergy symptoms, talk to your doctor about the best treatment options for you.
