A psychiatrist must first complete a bachelor's degree, which typically takes four years. After that, they must attend medical school for four years. Upon completion of medical school, psychiatrists must then complete a four-year residency in psychiatry. In total, this means that psychiatrists must complete 12 years of school and training before they can begin practicing independently.
