Understanding the Types of Schizophrenia: Symptoms and Characteristics
The following are the main types of schizophrenia:
1. Paranoid schizophrenia: This type of schizophrenia is characterised by delusions and hallucinations, paranoia and disorganised speech.
2. Disorganised schizophrenia: This type of schizophrenia is marked by pronounced disorganised speech and behaviour, and flat or inappropriate affect.
3. Catatonic schizophrenia: This type of schizophrenia is marked by bizarre motor behaviour and a lack of responsiveness.
4. Undifferentiated schizophrenia: This is a diagnosis applied to individuals who exhibit symptoms of schizophrenia that do not fit neatly in the other categories.
5. Residual schizophrenia: This diagnosis is applied after an acute schizophrenic episode when the symptoms have subsided, but there are still some residual symptoms.
