Wearing a Bra Overnight: Health Risks & Considerations
Not generally recommended.
While there is no definitive evidence that wearing a bra overnight is harmful, most medical experts agree it's not necessary and may cause discomfort and potential health issues.
Wearing a bra overnight may:
- Restrict blood circulation, especially if the bra is tight.
- Cause skin irritation, especially if the bra material is rough or non-breathable.
- Interfere with the natural lymphatic drainage of the breasts.
- Increase the risk of developing mastitis, a breast infection.
- Cause shoulder and neck pain due to the restriction of movement.
Exceptions:
- Women with large or heavy breasts may find that wearing a bra overnight provides support and comfort.
- Women who are breastfeeding or have recently given birth may find that a bra helps to prevent engorgement and pain.
Recommendations:
- Wear a loose-fitting, comfortable bra during the day.
- Avoid wearing a bra overnight unless necessary.
- Choose a bra made from breathable, soft material.
- Avoid bras with underwire or tight elastic.
