Perineal Care: When and How to Cleanse for Optimal Hygiene
Perineal care should be done:
- After bowel movement. Clean the perineal area from front to back using lukewarm water and a mild soap. Pat the area dry with a soft towel.
- After urinating. Gently cleanse the perineal area with lukewarm water and a mild soap. Pat the area dry with a soft towel.
- During menstruation. Change your menstrual pad or tampon regularly to avoid irritation. Clean the perineal area with lukewarm water and a mild soap after each pad or tampon change. Pat the area dry with a soft towel.
- During pregnancy. Clean the perineal area twice a day, once in the morning and once at night, using lukewarm water and a mild soap. Pat the area dry with a soft towel.
- After childbirth. Clean the perineal area after each bowel movement or urination. You can also use a peri bottle to cleanse the area. A peri bottle is a plastic bottle that you fill with lukewarm water and then use to squirt water over the perineal area. Pat the area dry with a soft towel.
