Understanding Nuns' Finances: Vows of Poverty and Communal Living

Nuns do not receive a "paycheck" or salary since most religious orders take a vow of poverty. They live communally and generally any "income" is considered to be communal property owned by the order as a whole. Basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter and healthcare are provided for by the order.
