Understanding E/M Coding Levels: A Comprehensive Guide
Evaluation and management (E/M) codes are grouped into five levels based on the complexity of the medical decision-making and the amount of time spent with the patient. The five levels are:
- Level 1: Simple office visit with uncomplicated medical decision-making.
- Level 2: Straightforward office visit with uncomplicated medical decision-making.
- Level 3: Complex office visit with moderate medical decision-making.
- Level 4: Complicated office visit with high medical decision-making.
- Level 5: Comprehensive office visit with very high medical decision-making.
Each level of E/M code has specific criteria that must be met in order to be billed. These criteria include the number of symptoms, diagnoses, and treatment options discussed; the amount of time spent with the patient; and the complexity of the medical decision-making.
By grouping E/M codes into five levels, healthcare providers can more accurately reflect the complexity of the care they provide and ensure that they are reimbursed appropriately.
