How to Obtain Medical Assisting Certification with Job Experience

Medical assisting credentials are available from several organizations that offer either certification or registry as a medical assistant. For those who gained on-the-job training as a medical assistant, versus a traditional college degree in the field, credentialing can be obtained with a proven record of three to five years of medical assistant work experience. Both registry and certification credentials require an in-depth written examination to test the knowledge and skill of the candidate.   Complete the application for certification for the organization you chose. Ensure you have all required documentation needed to prove your years of work experience in a medical assisting role. Gather work records and employer references, if applicable.

  Return your completed application, application fee if applicable and work documentation materials to the certifying board. Ensure you receive a confirmation of receipt, or follow-up a week after mailing to inquire if your application has been received.

  Study for the credentialing examination you have chosen. Write the certification examination on the testing date provided for you.
