Who many people end up in hospital because of dangerous sports?
The number of people who end up in hospital because of dangerous sports varies greatly depending on the specific sport and the level of participation.
According to a 2017 study by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), there were an estimated 652,055 sports-related injuries treated in U.S. emergency departments in 2016.
Of these injuries, 18% were attributed to "extreme" sports such as skateboarding, snowboarding, rock climbing, mountain biking, and skydiving. The most common extreme sports injuries were fractures (35%), contusions/abrasions (26%), and lacerations (14%).
Another study, conducted by the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS), found that the number of hospital admissions for serious sports injuries increased by 37% between 2002 and 2012.
