Strep Throat: How It Spreads & What Causes It in Children
Strep throat is caused by bacteria called Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus, or GAS).
Strep throat cannot be caught from dirt, animals, or objects. It most commonly spreads after close contact with respiratory droplets from someone who is ill.
