Can you be pregnant even if the pregnancy test says no?
In some instances, you can be pregnant even when a pregnancy test (or multiple tests) come back negative. This can happen for a variety of reasons, such as:
- Testing too early. Home pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken at least one day after your expected missed period. If you take a test too early, the levels of pregnancy hormone (hCG) in your urine may not be high enough to be detected.
-Not following package instructions. Be sure to carefully read and follow the directions on your pregnancy test kit. If you do not follow the instructions correctly, you could affect the accuracy of the test results.
- Certain medications or conditions. Some medications and medical conditions can interfere with the results of pregnancy tests. For example, fertility medications or ovarian cysts can cause your hCG levels to be elevated even if you are not pregnant.
- Very rare circumstances. In some rare cases, women may have an ectopic pregnancy (where the fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus) and still receive negative pregnancy test results. This is because ectopic pregnancies do not always produce detectable levels of hCG.
If you are concerned that you may be pregnant even though your pregnancy test results were negative, it is important to see your doctor for further evaluation. Your doctor can perform a blood test or ultrasound to confirm whether or not you are pregnant.
