Heterotopic Pregnancy: Understanding Simultaneous Uterine & Ectopic Pregnancies
It is extremely rare, but it is possible for a woman to have a normal pregnancy in the uterus while also having an ectopic pregnancy, known as a heterotopic pregnancy. In this situation, one fertilized egg implants in the uterus as normal, while the other implants and develops outside the uterus, usually in one of the fallopian tubes.
Heterotopic pregnancies are very uncommon and occur in about 1 out of every 10,000 pregnancies. They are associated with a higher risk of complications, such as rupture of the ectopic pregnancy, internal bleeding, and miscarriage of the intrauterine pregnancy.
If a heterotopic pregnancy is suspected, it is essential for the woman to receive prompt medical attention and undergo appropriate treatment to manage both the ectopic and the intrauterine pregnancies and safeguard her health.
