Determining Your Gestational Age: Methods & What to Expect
You can see how far along you are in pregnancy by looking at the size and shape of your uterus. The uterus is a pear-shaped organ that is located in the lower abdomen. It grows in size as the baby grows. The doctor can feel the size of the uterus by feeling your abdomen. This is called a pelvic exam.
The doctor can also use an ultrasound to see how far along you are in pregnancy. An ultrasound is a type of imaging test that uses sound waves to create pictures of the inside of your body. The ultrasound can show the baby's size and shape, as well as the location of the placenta.
Here is a general timeline of how the uterus grows during pregnancy:
* Weeks 1-4: The uterus is about the size of a small lemon.
* Weeks 5-8: The uterus is about the size of a large orange.
* Weeks 9-12: The uterus is about the size of a grapefruit.
* Weeks 13-16: The uterus is about the size of a cantaloupe.
* Weeks 17-20: The uterus is about the size of a pineapple.
* Weeks 21-24: The uterus is about the size of a basketball.
* Weeks 25-28: The uterus is about the size of a watermelon.
* Weeks 29-32: The uterus is about the size of a large pumpkin.
* Weeks 33-36: The uterus is about the size of a full-term baby.
The size of the uterus can vary from woman to woman. If you are concerned about the size of your uterus, talk to your doctor.
